Deadline to File Hurricane Irma Insurance Claims

The deadline to file Hurricane Irma insurance claims is fast approaching! There are only two (2) months left to file a Hurricane Irma insurance claim. Residents of Florida, according to Florida Statute 627.70132 please be aware that you have less than two months left to file a Hurricane Irma insurance claim. Basically stated: You have three (3) years to file a claim within three (3) years after the hurricane first made landfall or the windstorm caused the covered damage. Hurricane Irma occurred on September 10, 2017.

Winds May Cause Lift

Many homeowners and business owners do not realize they have hurricane damage until it is too late to file a claim. Especially vulnerable and overlooked is roof damage. Wind may have caused “lift” on roofs. Lift may go unnoticed by residents. Lift is when the wind lifts the tiles or shingles. During Hurricane Irma powerful winds and flying debris may have caused the shingles and tiles on your roof to lift upward and then fall back into their position. Thus, your roof may not display any outward signs of damage once the shingles and tiles have fallen back into place. The shingles and tiles do not reseal or reattach to the roof.

Exposure to Underlayment

The storm lifted shingles and tiles create exposure to the underlayment; such as, in Florida, heat, rain, hail, humidity, etc. Eventual leaks to the property are the result of the compromised underlayment. The leaks or ensuing damage may be immediately visible. However, leakages may not occur or noticed for many months or even years after a storm event.

Signs of Shingle Roof Damage

Signs of shingle roof storm damage include lifted shingles, granule loss, uneven lined nail pull through holes leaks and crack lines. If a single uplift has occurred (due to the storm), replacement of the entire roof would most likely restore your roof to the pre-event condition.

Signs of Tile Roof Damage

Signs of tile roof storm damage will consist of shifted tiles, cracked tiles, pulled screws, roof bowing. During the storm, while the tiles are lifting and shifting, known as chatter, they are pulling screws which will eventually cause leaks. Cracked tile pieces and debris will also penetrate the underlayment. If one tile has been compromised, the entire roof will need replacement.

Undetected Leak and Water Damage

Leaks and water damage that goes undetected in the attic, eventually causes more serious health issues such as toxic mold in the home. You may not realize your roof has been compromised until it is too late to file an insurance claim. Later, down the road, after the three years have passed, you may attempt to file a Hurricane Irma insurance claim. The insurance company could potentially and most likely will deny the insurance claim. The insurance company, in all probability, will claim Hurricane Irma damaged the roof and base their denial on the required time limit to file the claim expired.

Along with roof damage, there are usually other damage to the structure that are not evident to the home or business owner.
